Classification of Silicone Resin Coatings

Oct 9, 2021

Silicone resin coatings can be divided into pure organic resin coatings and modified silicone resin coatings.
Pure silicone paint is formed by dissolving pure silicone resin in xylene. It has good heat resistance, weather resistance, corrosion resistance, and insulation, but it has poor mechanical strength, adhesion and long drying time. But it can be modified with other resins to improve it. .

Modified silicone resin coating is a coating with modified silicone resin as the film-forming substance, including the following three types.
① Cold-mixed silicone paint refers to the paint made by cold-mixing silicone resin and other organic resins. Resins with good miscibility include phenolic resins, methacrylic resins, amino resins, alkyd resins, epoxy resins, polyester resins, and ethyl fiber resins. After these resins are added, the curing temperature of the coating decreases and the mechanical strength increases.
② Co-condensation type organic silicon coating refers to the coating made by cold mixing organic silicon intermediates containing active groups and other organic resins with them. The adhesion, solvent resistance, flexibility, and color retention of this type of coating are all stronger than cold-mixed coatings, but the heat resistance is reduced.
③ Co-polycondensation and cold-mixing type silicone coating refers to the coating obtained by adding appropriate other resins to the organic silicone resin produced by copolymerization and cold mixing with it. The adhesion, color retention, and flexibility of this type of coating are equivalent to those of copolycondensation type coatings, and they can be dried at room temperature and are inexpensive.

According to the purpose of the coating
Silicone resin coatings can be divided into organic silicon heat-resistant coatings, organic silicon weather-resistant coatings, organic silicon insulating coatings, organic silicon elastic coatings, and organic silicon waterproof coatings.
① Silicone heat-resistant coatings Heat-resistant coatings refer to coatings that can withstand temperatures above 200 for a long time. Silicone heat-resistant coatings have excellent heat-resistant properties, begin to decompose at around 300 ℃, and are widely used in heat-resistant coatings. Table 2 lists the common domestic silicone heat-resistant coatings. The performance of silicone heat-resistant coatings is related to the methyl/phenyl value contained in the silicone oligomer used, because the phenyl group has better heat resistance and poor physical and mechanical properties than the methyl group.
Pigments used in silicone heat-resistant coatings should have heat resistance, and appropriate pigments should be selected according to actual requirements. Table 3 lists the pigments used in commonly used silicone heat-resistant coatings and their temperatures. The anti-rust pigments can be strontium yellow and zinc phosphate. Avoid using leaded pigments in silicone heat-resistant coatings, because lead pigments will reduce the heat resistance of the coating.
② Organic silicon insulating coatingSilicone insulating paint is a very important type of insulating paint, which belongs to class H insulating material, with a heat resistance rating of 180 ℃. It has excellent thermal oxidation stability and insulation properties, water resistance and moisture resistance, and a wide range of use. The insulation resistance can be used normally in a wide temperature range (-50-250 ℃) and high and low frequency ranges. It is worth mentioning that When it is destroyed at high temperature, it generally does not burn, does not form coke and conducts electricity, and the residue is SiO2. Silicone insulating coatings have a wide application range, and can be used as high and low temperature resistant insulating paints, silicone bonding insulating paints, silicone insulating impregnating paints, silicone insulating covering enamels, silicone insulating paints for silicon steel sheets, silicone electrical components paint, flame retardant Type organic silicon insulating coating, organic silicon moisture-proof insulating coating, etc.
③ Silicone weather-resistant coating
Silicone weather-resistant coatings generally use alkyd, polyester, and acrylic resin modified silicone resins. They are the most widely used type of weather-resistant coatings. This type of coating can withstand various natural changes outdoors. Alkyd modified silicone resin weather-resistant coatings have a lifespan of 8-10 years. They are inexpensive and can be cured at room temperature. They are widely used and can be used for coating of outdoor facilities and equipment. The curing agent of polyester and acrylic-modified silicone resin weather-resistant coatings is melamine. Resin, used as waterproof coating for civil construction and housing.
